The Emerging Alltel Ringback

By James Witney

A revolution in ring tones; the alltel ring back. Let your friends identify you with a cool ringtone they hear, when you call. You control the ringback they hear.

Last year, Alltel Wireless uncovered a stunning joint venture with Motricity, a company that specializes in designing and distributing creative games and other content to mobile devices. The purpose of the partnership was to develop a launching pad for the Alltel ringback. As a variation from the wildly popular ringtone platform, ringbacks allow wireless customers to play the songs of their choice while callers wait for them to answer the phone. As competitors watched, the new venture (called Axcess) began creating their stable of popular ringbacks. Below, we'll describe how these ringbacks work and the easiest way to download them.

What Is An Alltel Ringback?

At its simplest, a ringback is a replacement for the conventional "ringing" sound callers hear when they call your phone. In effect, ringbacks are ringtones that are played for the benefit of callers. They push the personalization element of ringtones to a new level as you can program certain songs to play for various callers. If a business associate calls, you can program your phone to play a soft, professional song as any respectable business might. By contrast, you can play a country song for a close friend or a jazz tune for your father. Ringbacks can be a great opportunity to surprise those who are close to you with their favorite bands or songs when they call. As such, you can use it as a way of letting them know that they're special to you.

Downloading An Alltel Ringback

There are a few different ways in which to download ringbacks. Axcess (the joint partnership between Alltel and Motricity) has made their inventory available online or from your phone. The easiest way to purchase and download a ringback is by accessing the Axcess website with your wireless phone. Ringbacks are usually priced at $1.99 each. Unlike Sprint PCS (which only allows you to use the tone for 90 days), Axcess provides you with unlimited use for 12 months.

Once you have downloaded ringbacks onto your phone, you can assign them to play when certain people call you or when anyone in your phone's 3 default groups calls. While ringtones can be a fun way of identifying people when they call, an Alltel ringback actually lets the caller know that you've thought of them.
