These are the days of captivating ringtones - the mellifluous voice flowing from mobile phones. Be it a busy businessman, a pious priest, a sporty teenager or a studious student- everybody has his or her won choice of ringtones. Manifold ringtones are available today, that one can even identify the personality of the user to some extent depending on his choice of ring tone.

The Ring Tone Text Transfer Language (RTTTL) was the format used for the earliest form of melody which was sold on a commercial basis. Musical sounds were created using a text based format. The monophonic melody, which was based on RTTTL, was created in Finland in 2001 and it became available commercially in that country in 2001. Here, notes of different frequencies were specially arranged, which produced only one sound at one time.

What followed was the more complicated form of melody called the polyphonic ringtones. Here sixteen different sounds could be produced at one time. Musical quality was achieved in melodies at this stage. This can be considered as the second generation ringtones, which became popular in 2002 due to the fact that instrumental tones could be incorporated into it.

This was followed by the true tones, which have established a place of their own in the industry. This type, which was based on audio formats such as MP3, AAC and WMA, is also called the master tone pr real tone due to their superior sound quality and variety they offer.

It is really amazing to find that the increasing demand for true tones paved the way for a billion dollar industry - the ringtone business. People are always in search of novelty. In the case of melodies, they began seeking for customizations. People who had an instinct for business spotted this opportunity and there was no reason for the fledgling industry to look back.

Earlier, third party businesses like Info Space used to make and standardize monophonic and polyphonic ringtones for each handset. Interaction with customers for distribution and billing was also done by companies like them. But the role of middlemen got diminished with the introduction of true tones. Now songs are published by all cell phone manufacturers for their hand sets. Sometimes tones for cell phones are published even before the album containing those tones is published. This shows the extent to which the business has gathered momentum. These ringtones earn a lot for the music companies. Phone melodies have become cheaper today due to the vastness of volumes involved. Self expression is possible through real tones, which reveals the taste, character and taste of a person. Thus it is clear that people personalize their ringtones not just for enjoyment.

Later in 2004, the Crazy Frog melody drew the attention of the multitudes. Even though the sound was a bit irritating, the craze for a change helped it to achieve much more publicity and acceptance than expected and the company which marketed the tone rose into prominence with this single ringtone.

More innovations like the Name tone and Video Ring tones have also come into the scene lately. The former is a true tone with the name of the owner of the cell phone inlaid, and the latter is an MP3 file played along with a selected video clip. With more and more innovations, ringtones and the variety they offer are going to see a sea change in terms of variety and choices for the customer.
